Dark also in its history of fear and death. Below ground it is literally dark, ‘pitched past pitch of black.’ as Ackroyd writes, channelling G M Hopkins. Tunnel entrances are seldom called doors rather, they are portals, immediately summoning up the image of moving into another world. The ground below us is described frequently as ‘the underworld’ and there are references throughout the book to Hades, the Styx, Pluto. If you believe Ackroyd, most secrets are dark ones. Each stratum below has a secret to reveal, with many more still to come. It’s always thrilled me to think of the thousands of years of history under your feet as you pace the streets of London. There are a lot of facts in London Under but, this being Ackroyd, all are subject to imaginative interpretation. Compared with his mighty tomes, London, the Biography and Thames, Sacred River, this book is novella-length at 182 pages but boy, is it dense. All this explains why I grabbed Peter Ackroyd’s London Under when I saw it at the library. Later, I read Peter Laurie’s classic Beneath the City Streets and learned about the secret underground places. The tube, sewers, tunnels carrying cables, all caught my imagination. My interest in what goes on underground started years ago when I saw a Look at Life film about ‘People who work when we’re asleep’. Has anyone else been following the BBC 2 series The Tube? I saw the first three episodes and found it fascinating, if something of a PR job.

“To me, Marilyn had always been a bit one-dimensional,” Cooper says. He was the one who sold Cooper on the concept, convinced that she would also come to see the person behind the legacy of victimhood. Cooper’s film joins investigative journalist Anthony Summers as he recounts the important points of his 1985 book Goddess: The Secret Lives of Marilyn Monroe, its timeline and accompanying insights repackaged for a visual medium. The instinct to do away with appearances and expose the foundations undergirding an image aptly matches the intent of her latest project, which favors fact-based reportage over thrall to Monroe’s dazzle. The inked portrait isn’t a caricature of those distinguishing features instead it’s winnowed down to uncolored outlines so minimal we may as well be looking at the screen idol’s bones. (I’ll take a squirrel with a dagger over middle school angst any day.) I like that there is no question that the bad guys are all bad – that’s good for younger readers. There are strong morals, good conquers evil, sacrifice is necessary, and things like that that are so great to see in chapter books for tweens. With fantasy and adventure chapter books, sometimes content is too intense for kids who are old enough to be in the recommended “reading level.” Overall, the content in these books should be appropriate for any family that enjoyed The Green Ember series. However, this does not mean that it will perfectly align with what is right for your family at that age. For each book on this list, I share what the publisher recommends for the reading level. He is not in harmony with the world, so he resides in his thoughts without caring to notice what is actually happening around him. He wants to remain unnoticed, for he feels that the people in the world are raising their fingers at him. He wavers and quivers and threatens to burst into flames. He lost his balance of mind and became insane for all practical purposes. He could never recover from the shock of the death of Evans, so the shell which killed Evans virtually brought about a destruction in his life. While in the army he befriended his officer, Evans: but he was shocked beyond repairs when he was killed by a shell. He was at one time a promising young man, but the war in which he participated with distinction, took away from his life all that was fascinating and made him a ruined man in all respects. He is pale-faced, beak-nosed with a look of apprehension in the presence of which complete strangers are made apprehensive too. Septimus Warren Smith is about thirty years of age. To tell that story, they broke long-standing taboos. Plunged into successive global crises, Gunther, Knickerbocker, Sheean, and Thompson could no longer separate themselves from the turmoil that surrounded them. Living in the heady afterglow of Freud, they subjected themselves to frank, critical scrutiny and argued about love, war, sex, death, and everything in between. Alongside these backstage glimpses into the halls of power, they left another equally incredible set of records. In those tumultuous years, they landed exclusive interviews with Hitler and Mussolini, Nehru and Gandhi, and helped shape what Americans knew about the world. While empires collapsed and fledgling democracies faltered, they chased deposed empresses, international financiers, and Balkan gun-runners, and then knocked back doubles late into the night. As cub reporters in the 1920s, they roamed across a war-ravaged world, sometimes perched atop mules on wooden saddles, sometimes gliding through countries in the splendor of a first-class sleeper car.
